Re-Use of Electronic Health Record Data for Clinical Research: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
James J. Cimino, MD,
Director, Informatics Institute, University of Alabama at Birmingham
With the near-universal adoption of electronic health record systems in the United States, together with clarification of the ethics of reuse of data from in these systems, has resulted in the sudden availability of clinical datasets on literally hundreds of millions of patients. Clinical and translational researchers see great potential value in the use of data to answer research questions without the usual costs associated with collection of human subjects’ data. The presentation will discuss what is available, some of the caveats for those attempting its use, and some of the systems available for access.
